Getting Started with Split Domain Delivery

How it works:

Since you cannot separate mail destinations on the Proxy level, we have to utilize basic components in SMTP to accomplish split domain delivery.

Before any split domain delivery can be set-up, Administrators must choose the location of the POP3 mailboxes, wither hosted with Own Web Now ($9.99/domain/month for 75 mailboxes) or outside of Own Web Now. In either case, Administrators will have to make sure the POP3 user mailboxes are created properly before attempting to setup split domain delivery. Any users that are moving to Hosted Exchange will need a forward account created on the POP3 server to deliver mail to the third level domain (Which is completed in the last steps). If the POP3 mailboxes are going to be hosted with Own Web Now, administrators will need to login to the service manager and order "Web Hosting" and then use the credentials provided to setup the individual POP3 mailboxes.

Administrators should carefully review this guide entirely before beginning any work as each configuration is different, and an incorrect configuration can severly interrrupt mail flow. Example, if the POP3 users also want Exchangedefender, you will obviously need to change the MX record to inbound30. In the cases of special setups, we urge partners to create support requests describing their setup in detail before beginnng work.

Example: domain cfgfs.com with POP3 accounts hosted outside of OWN.

Administrator created third-level domain MX record of dewey.cfgfs.com and pointed MX to inbound30.exchangedefender, and then created mailbox forwards for the Hosted Exchange users to user@dewey.cfgfs.com

When internet users email user@cfgfs.com, it will be delivered to the customers POP3 server, which will then determine if it needs to be forwarded to user@dewey.cfgfs.com.

Administrators will need to create a new third-level MX record of exchange.domainname.com which points to inbound30.exchangedefender.com while keeping their secons-level domain MX (main MX record) still pointed at their POP3 server.

Example: Third-level domain MX lookup.

[12:41 - 0.01] [root ns1] ~]$ nslookup -q=mx dewey.cfgfs.com
Server: 65.99.192.50
Address: 65.99.192.50#53

dewey.cfgfs.com mail exchanger = 10 inbound30.exchangedefender.com.

Example: Main domain MX lookup.

[11:11 - 14.31] [root inbound62] ~]$ dig mx cfgs.com

; <<>> Dig 9.2.4 <<>> mx cfgfs.com

;; QUESTION SECTION:
; cfgfs.com. IN MX

;; ANSWER Section:
cfgfs.com 3600 IN MX 20 mx2.emailsrvr.com.
cfgfs.com 3600 IN MX 10 mx1.emailsrvr.com.

Once the MX record is created and the POP3 users are active, administrators can create the Hosted Exchange users (Make sure to order the accounts with the primary domain name, and not the third-level doamin name, e.g. user@domain.com) through the Service Manager.

After the Exchange users are created, Administrators can open a support request @ https://support.ownwebnow.com to finalize the split domain delivery. during the finalization process, our team will reprovision the users to include the email address user@exchange.domain.com and reprovision ExchangeDefender to accept mail for the third level domain.

Once the work is completed on our end, Administrators can safely either a.) delete the POP 3 mailbox for the new Exchange user and then create an External Forwards account OR b.) add a rule on the POP3 mailbox to forward to user@exchange.domain.com.
